Behind the camera,
the landscape comes first.
I'm Justin Mockenhaupt, a Colorado-based landscape photographer drawn to mountains, changing weather, quiet forests, night skies, and the fleeting conditions that can completely transform a familiar landscape.
My photography is less about documenting a location and more about capturing how it felt to be there. Fog moving through the trees, first light reaching a mountain range, autumn color along an empty road, or stars appearing over the high country—those temporary moments are what keep bringing me back outside.
Much of my work is created throughout Colorado and the American West. The process often means long drives, early mornings, hiking in the dark, changing plans with the weather, and waiting for conditions that may only last a few minutes.
Photography has given me a way to share the places and moments that inspire me most. This website brings together landscapes, changing light, weather, and quiet scenes I've been fortunate enough to experience throughout Colorado and beyond. My goal is to create photographs that encourage people to slow down, look a little closer, and feel a connection to the natural world.
The Approach
Chasing conditions, not content.
The strongest photographs rarely happen on a schedule. I return to places, follow weather, wait for light, and allow the landscape to dictate the pace. The goal is not constant output—it is to make photographs that are worth remembering.
